Jeanette + Mario’s Engagement Session – What a great time hanging out with Jeanette and Mario this past Monday! We went to 3rd St. Promenade and the pier in Santa Monica, and even to the exact location where Mario proposed to Jeanette. They’ve been dating for several, several years, and I’m just beyond thrilled to be a part of their day later this October 9th.

Thanks to one of my favorite people in the world Yolanda, who roomed with Jeanette for four years, I was able to meet this wonderful couple. Jeanette and Mario even busted out their old school Descendents rock band t-shirt during the shoot. Thanks again guys for a great time in Santa Monica, see you again soon!

Dina + Michael’s Wedding: 7/24/2010 – The ingredients to happiness and love include: USC, family, Coptic Orthodox religion, friends, Lakers, kick-butt wedding party, a beautiful ballroom for nearly 300 guests, memorable toasts, a ton of dancing, live music, and two unforgettable individuals in Dina and Michael. Also, let’s not forget Cal State Fullerton!!!

As some of you might know, my birthday was last Wednesday. I couldn’t have asked for a better gift than to have Dina and Michael’s wedding be the first one I photograph at the age of 27. The day was just filled with so many moments! From the get-go at the getting ready, where literally nearly twenty girls got ready, to the Coptic Orthodox ceremony (my very first and boy was it fun!), where even the priests take photos and I’m allowed to walk up right to Dina and Michael for pics :), to the portraits, where the bridal party was great to work with, to finally the reception, where everyone brought the house down.

It’s wonderful couples like Dina and Michael that keep inspiring me to do what I do. I have to pinch myself everyday making sure all of this isn’t too good to be true; not because of what I do, but because of who I get to do it for. Dina is one of the sweetest girls ever, whom I met through Allison and Josh (SO GOOD to see you guys again and congrats on the baby girl!).

And I clicked with Mike the second I met him. He’s a great guy that not only takes care of Dina, his family, and friends, but also me, making sure I’m fed, offering to take me out to dinner countless times, and not rubbing in the fact that the Lakers won the title jk ;). Both Dina and Michael have always treated me like a friend and not just a photographer. So it gave me so much more meaning to capture their day this past Saturday.

I know this isn’t goodbye and we’ll be talking to each other very soon, but I’m definitely going to miss you guys! Thank you both from the bottom of my heart. And just for “old time” sakes, I’d like to say, “RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!” Congrats Dina and Michael!

Jessica + Rory’s Wedding: 7/17/2010 – Quite simply put, I LOVE Jessica and Rory. If I could photograph their wedding again and again, I’d be more than a happy camper. Photographing their wedding this past Saturday was like attending a college reunion (but much more fun and meaningful of course!), with several familiar faces in the crowd ;). I’ve been looking forward to Jess and Rory’s big day for a long, long time.

The day was filled with so much laughter, love, and emotion.  Jessica greeted me with open arms the very minute I stepped into the getting ready room at Newport Beach Marriott Hotel. And the final moments for me at the reception consisted of Jess and Rory giving me hugs and one final kiss for the camera as they celebrated the night away with their guests.

J + R aren’t your “average” cool lawyers; they are the coolest of cool. Jessica’s super fun, happy-going, and loving personality meshes so well with Rory’s quiet, easy-going, kind, and caring attributes. I met them for their e-session last July. And here we are a year later…oh how time flies! They both currently live and work in the nation’s capital but flew out to sunny Orange County for their wedding.

To Jessica and Rory, I wished words and photos could truly describe how much you guys mean to me. Just like how you’ve touched the lives of your family and friends, you’ve inspired me to do what I do. Thank you for allowing me to come into your lives and capture your wonderful memories.

We all find inspiration, ideas, motivation, and just the will to do what we do from various places and people. Obvious ones like money, fame, and power tend to be at the top of that list. For me personally, nothing trumps the ability to make a difference in someone’s life. Photography is much more than taking pretty photos. It’s about making connections, building relationships, and capturing moments that will last for a long time.

Amidst the busy wedding season, I had a chance take a breather this past Wednesday and spent a few minutes with the co-winners of my Blogstalkers Portrait Session Contest. Please meet the Gonzalez Family: Lily, Nick, and their four amazing children Justin, Haley, Nicole, and Ashley (from oldest to youngest).

Towards the end of January, I received an e-mail from Elizabeth Morales, who nominated her aunt Lily and her family. I want to share with you the letter she wrote me, which inspired me to pick this amazing family as the winners of the contest:

A Testament of Hope and Love

On October 31, 2008 my aunt Lily (34 years old) was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia while she was 7 months pregnant with her fourth child. As she drove to the hospital that Halloween day her doctor discovered that her white blood count was over 100,000 whereas normal levels are only at 10,000. She was misdiagnosed with fatigue throughout her pregnancy until they discovered it was cancer. Amazingly enough she delivered a healthy baby girl named Ashley Diana Gonzalez. There was little hope that she would survive. But she did.

As a close knit family we never gave up hope despite the odds. With lots of prayer, support and Love from friends and family, we became comforted however, aware that our time with her was both limited and precious. Soon after giving birth she was transferred to City of Hope where she received intense chemo, radiation, and a risky bone marrow transplant. Last December 2008, our family celebrated the One year anniversary of her second birthday. Now, at 98 pounds she struggles with another disease known as chronic graft-versus-host disease1 (GVHD).

I nominate my aunt and her family as the deserving recipients of your prize because despite the testing experience my aunt and uncle are enduring, they epitomize everything that is important: Hope, Love, Strength, and Support. At the time of her diagnosis her children were only 5, 4 and 3 years old. Her only concern was that they would not remember her because of their age. Now, her oldest will be 7 years old and the baby she miraculously delivered is 2. Since her diagnosis they have not taken a family portrait with Ashley, nor is it easy to save for such a project when funds are paying for a buffet of medication and doctor’s visits. My grandparents are retired and try to provide for their necessities, and her siblings do what they can to help. However, it is hard.

Winning this contest for them would mean giving her the opportunity to have a permanent and memorable reminder that she has been strong enough to fight her disease to hug, to love, and be with her kids and family. She has inspired me to always have hope and never give up, while giving others comfort, hope and counseling as they overcome their own tribulations. I am so proud to call this REMARKABLE lady family! God Bless you!

Thank you Elizabeth for sharing with me (and allowing me to pass it on) the amazing story of your aunt Lily and her fight not only against Leukemia but to delivery little Ashley. In the hour or so that I spent with the Gonzalez Family, I felt such a strong bond of hope, courage, and unconditional love.

I want to give a big shout out to not just Lily but her husband Nick. To raise a family of four children and help your wife get back on her feet shows characters beyond any words I can put together. I can’t thank you all enough for allowing me to come into your life, even if it was just for a short period of time, and giving me the opportunity to capture your moments. I hope these photos, like your love for one another, transcends many, many generations.
